If you read my post How does the Grading System work?, you already know that Ontario uses the EQAO assessments (Education Quality and Accountability Office). This organization oversees standardized testing at different stages of a student’s education:
- Grade 3: Reading, Writing & Math
- Grade 6: Reading, Writing & Math
- Grade 9: Math
- Grade 10: OSSLT (Ontario Secondary School Literacy Test)
On December 3, 2025, the results for the 2024–2025 school year were finally released (after a few months of delay) and they are definitely concerning😞. What’s worse is that this isn’t new… we’ve been seeing this pattern for several years now❗.
So what’s going on? Aren’t we supposed to have one of the best education systems in the world? Are the standards too high? And if they are, why aren’t students receiving the proper support to meet them? Yes, post-COVID effects are still present, but by now we should have clear plans to improve the situation.
To give you an idea:
For Grade 3:
- 74% meet the reading standard
- 65% meet the writing standard
- 64% meet the math standard
For Grade 6:
- 86% meet the reading standard
- 85% meet the writing standard
- 51% meet the math standard (yes, pretty much half of the students!)😞
For Grade 9
- Only 58% meet the math standard.
📌Why is everyone talking about this now? Why hasn’t the government taken action to fix the problem? Why do we keep spending so much of our tax money on other policies instead of investing more in education and public health?
I truly hope this isn’t just another way to politically distract us.🤐
