Your Health Card is just the beginning: How to get a Family Doctor

Once you’ve got your health card, the next step is to find a family doctor. Where can you find one? At the clinics or walk-in clinics.

If someone you know can recommend a good doctor, even better! My advice: choose a doctor close to home. The process is pretty simple: you call or visit a clinic or walk-in clinic, request an appointment to get assigned a family doctor, and provide your details, including your health card information.

Now, keep in mind that not all doctors are accepting new patients, and that can be a big challenge. If that’s the case, you have two options: keep searching for another doctor who is accepting new patients, or sign up for a waiting list, which can take several months. Another helpful option is to search online through the official portal: 👉 Find a doctor in Ontario

📌Your family doctor will always be your first point of contact for anything related to your health. At your first appointment, they’ll do a general check-up (Physical exam) and complete your medical history. They may order lab tests (which are mostly covered by the health system), and they’ll handle any initial treatment, prescriptions, and follow-up. If your case requires more specialized care, they will refer you to a specialist (more on that later!).

Important: You’ll always need to book an appointment in advance to see your family doctor. I recommend doing it early, as wait times are typically 1 to 4 weeks, so, yes, get ready to be patient!

I truly hope you connect well with your family doctor; that matters more than you might think. In our case, we just didn’t click with the first doctor we chose, and it wasn’t a language issue. As soon as I could, I requested a change. Thank God, our new doctor communicates much better.

If something similar happens to you, you can simply ask your new doctor to request your medical records from the previous one. Just note that your former doctor may charge an administrative fee for transferring the information.
