✨Did you know thrift stores (both in person and online) are super common in Canada? You can buy and sell all kinds of secondhand treasures there!
Buying and selling used goods might sound simple, and to be honest, a few years ago, it really was. But things have changed! The game has become more competitive, prices aren’t always fair, and you now have to watch out for people who try to take advantage of the system. Harsh, but true.😥
So, what are the most popular options?
🏪 Physical Thrift Stores
Pros: You can find them almost everywhere! The most well-known are The Salvation Army, Goodwill, and Value Village. You’ll also find more specialized stores, for sports gear, kids’ clothes, women’s fashion, antiques, records, books, and more. Most of these shops work on donations, then resell the items either for profit or to help local families.
Cons: Their pricing isn’t always consistent or fair. You can find great bargains, but sometimes, you’ll see a used item priced 3X higher than a new one at a dollar store!🤯
🛍️ Shop like a pro: Focus on items that are new with tags (yes, you can find those!) or truly unique pieces. For everything else, check the new retail price before you buy. Thrift stores are excellent for children’s clothing since kids outgrow their clothes and shoes so quickly.
💻 Online Platforms
Pros: These are fully digital. The most popular ones are Kijiji and Facebook Marketplace, though there are others. You can literally find everything, and both buy and sell items easily.
Cons:
- When buying, you often have to travel to pick up your purchase. For electronics or appliances, make sure they work before paying.
- Selling, however, can be a real headache, and I say that from years of experience! 🤭First, research what similar items sell for in your area to price yours competitively. Then, prepare to deal with the endless and annoying “Is this available?” messages and lowball offers (people offering less than half your asking price). And worst of all: some buyers never show up!.
- ❗Sad but true: there are so many scammers out there! Be cautious about who you’re dealing with.
🛍️ Shop like a pro:
- When buying: Please, be good human being and don’t waste a seller’s time. If it’s not in your budget, keep looking.
- When selling:
- List your item about $10–15 higher than your target price so you can negotiate.
- Avoid cash… with so much counterfeit money around, e-transfer is safer.💸
- Don’t share your address or phone number right away. Many “buyers” ask for it and then disappear. Meet in a safe, public spot instead.
- And always check the buyer’s or seller’s reviews and profile. They tell you a lot about who you’re dealing with.
🏡 Garage Sales
Pros: In spring and summer, tracking neighborhood garage sales can be a fun hunt for bargains. If you enjoy hosting one, go for it! (I tried once… not really my favorite experience 😅). Like thrift stores, you can find amazing deals.
Cons: Selling can be a lot of effort for very little money in return.
🛍️ Shop like a pro: Focus on items that are new or truly unique. The best ones to visit? Moving sales!
♻️ Other Options for Giving Away Items
If you have things in good condition that you don’t need or want to sell, try these:
- Donate to a Thrift Store: they receive most of items and then resell them.
- Donation bins: found in parking lots and public areas.
- Churches: contact your church or a local one; they often help families in need.
- Refugee or newcomer centers: great way to support others starting fresh.
- List as “Free” on Kijiji or Marketplace for curbside pickup.
- Leave items by the curb on garbage day. Trust me, someone will quickly give them a second life!
